Life Group Class
Wednesday Evenings
When: Wednesdays, biweekly starting September 21, 2022 thru April 26, 2023
Time: 6 - 7:30 pm
Where: Room 101 (aka "the old kitchen")
Facilitator: Keith Theodore
Study: "Colossians, the Preeminence of Christ"
Description: This class will be a study of the apostle Paul's letter to the Colossians. In this letter Paul confronts a false teaching that had infiltrated the Christian church in the ancient city of Colossae. This false teaching seems to have been a mixture of Jewish legalism, eastern mysticism, and Gnosticism, and sough tot add something to, or take something away from, the Person and work of Jesus. Paul deals with this false teaching by reminding the Colossians of the preeminence of Jesus in all things. Paul knew that if the Colossians grasped even a glimpse of the fullness of God in Jesus and comprehended a fraction of the total and complete adequacy of His work. they would come to realize their true identity, in Christ, and stop looking elsewhere for spiritual fulfillment.
In the pluralistic world in which we live today, where there is a religion and philosophy to meet every diverse need and mood, contemporary Christians are just as vulnerable to these types of teachings as were the Colossians Christians.
Our world is critically ill. Our world is seriously broken, Consequently, our world is desperately searching for a cure; a cure that is ultimately found only in the Person and work of Jesus. However, secular remedies of all kids abound and have become so engrained in contemporary society, that many Christians are buying into some of theses false remedies. Consequently, no New Testament book speaks with more relevancy today than this letter to the Colossians.
As we dive into the richness of this book we will learn, as did the Colossians living in another age of religious and cultural pluralism, how to respond tactfully, yet boldly, to the falsehoods that aim to corrupt our faith today. And, in the process, we will earn that Jesus is not only preeminent in all things, but also how to keep "Jesus preeminent" in the "all things" of our lives.
